What is Music Therapy?

There is a professional site developed for the profession of music therapy at musictherapy.org.  Here is the official definition of music therapy that you can find that website:

Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.
Music therapy interventions can be designed to:
  • Promote Wellness
  • Manage Stress
  • Alleviate Pain
  • Express Feelings
  • Enhance Memory
  • Improve Communication
  • Promote Physical Rehabilitation
Research in music therapy supports its effectiveness in a wide variety of healthcare and educational settings.

For Daniel and Tiffany, music therapy interventions are designed to:
  • Enhance quality of life in the development of life-long leisure skills
  • Improve motor skills through instrument play and dance
  • Improve communication/language skills through songwriting and singing
  • Encourage proper breathing through vocal exercise
  • Promote appropriate behaviors and self-esteem
Every 3 months, the goals are evaluated and rewritten if needed to meet the current needs at that time.
